Australia’s First Ever Kho Kho Ground Inaugurated in Liverpool, NSW: A Historic Leap for Indian Sport Down Under

Liverpool, NSW – In a landmark event for Indian sports and multicultural engagement in Australia, Kho Kho Australia officially inaugurated the country’s first dedicated Kho Kho ground in Liverpool, Sydney, during a vibrant two-day celebration held on the 23rd and 24th of May 2025 at Marsden Road Public School.

A Groundbreaking Moment for Traditional Indian Sport

The festivities kicked off on 23rd May with a special session tailored for local school students. Over 500 young attendees had the unique opportunity to witness a live demonstration of Kho Kho — a high-energy, strategic team sport deeply rooted in Indian tradition. The demonstration not only highlighted the sport’s agility and pace but also marked a proud moment for Indian Australians championing cultural heritage through sports.

Esteemed guests graced the student-focused event, including:

  • Peter Rouse, Director of Leadership and Liverpool Principal Network, Department of Education NSW

  • Charishma Kaliyanda MP, Member of the NSW Parliament

  • Nirav Sutariya, Consul and Head of Chancery, Consulate General of India

  • Manisha Gazula, Principal of Marsden Road Public School

Their presence signified the growing recognition of Indian sports and cultural integration within Australian education and public institutions.

Community Celebration and Innovation on Display

The second day of the event, 24th May, was open to the public and drew strong participation from the broader community. Demonstration matches showcased the sport’s excitement and fostered community interest in the game. Dignitaries and sports enthusiasts gathered to witness this new chapter in Australian sports history, including:

  • Mr. Sameer Pandey, Councillor and former Lord Mayor of the City of Parramatta

  • Dr. Rajiv Jairam, President of NSW HSS

  • Peter Harle, Deputy Mayor, Liverpool Council

  • Manisha Gazula, Principal, Marsden Road Public School

A key innovation at the newly unveiled ground is the world’s first removable Kho Kho pole mechanism — a practical, game-changing feature that enables the field to be shared with other sports. This flexible infrastructure maximizes the use of public sporting grounds and sets a replicable model for other cities. With eyes now on Melbourne and Canberra, Kho Kho Australia aims to expand this initiative nationally.

Voices from the Field

Players expressed excitement and pride at the historic development.

"Playing on this new ground has been an incredible experience. The facility is world-class, and the removable poles make it easy for us to train alongside other sports," said Mudra Bhatt, Kho Kho player.

"It’s amazing to see Kho Kho gaining recognition and support here in Australia. This ground will definitely inspire more young players to take up the sport," added Michael Limanuel, fellow player.

A Vision for Growth and Inclusion

Committee Member Varsha Tembe underscored the milestone’s significance, stating:

"This ground represents a milestone in promoting Kho Kho nationally. Achieving this just months after the World Cup in January is a testament to the dedication and passion of everyone involved. Our vision is to create accessible, multi-use facilities that not only celebrate this traditional sport but also foster community engagement and inclusivity."

Looking Ahead

The launch of this Kho Kho ground marks a major step in Kho Kho Australia’s broader vision — to champion healthy lifestyles, community bonding, and multicultural inclusion through sport. It reflects the growing footprint of Indian culture in Australia and the nation's openness to embracing global sporting traditions.
