The Settlement Council of Australia (SCOA) has welcomed the Federal Government’s announcement to establish a dedicated Office for Multicultural Affairs within the Department of Home Affairs. The initiative was officially unveiled on Tuesday by The Hon. Dr. Anne Aly, Minister for Multicultural Affairs.
In a statement, SCOA commended the move as a significant advancement in Australia’s commitment to diversity, inclusion, and community cohesion.
“We commend the Government for recognising the importance of establishing a dedicated Office for Multicultural Affairs. This is a welcome initiative towards shared responsibility in promoting social cohesion through meaningful collaboration with multicultural communities,” said Melissa Monteiro, Chair of SCOA’s Board.
SCOA emphasised that successful settlement involves more than just providing for the basic needs of migrants and refugees. True integration, the Council argues, is dependent on fostering a sense of belonging, ensuring equitable access to services and opportunities, and encouraging full participation in Australia’s civic life.
Minister Aly’s consistent advocacy for justice, inclusion, and dignity has been pivotal in driving policies that support multicultural Australia. Her leadership in establishing the new Office was strongly acknowledged by SCOA.
“This is a powerful step forward, recognising not only the importance of celebrating multiculturalism but valuing it as foundational to the fabric of modern Australia,” added Maria Dimopoulos, CEO of SCOA.
The Council has expressed its intention to work closely with the new Office, bringing to the table the sector’s expertise, insights, and lived experiences to ensure that multicultural policy is both effective and representative of Australia’s diverse communities.
SCOA is the national peak body representing the settlement sector in Australia, advocating for the needs of newly arrived migrants and refugees to support their full participation in society.
