The third annual BAPS Swaminarayan Research Institutes conference recently brought together over 21 religious and cultural organisations from across Sydney's southwest.
Held for the first time at the newly opened BAPS Swaminarayan Hindu Mandir and Cultural Precinct, this year's conference focused on the theme, Timeless Wisdom Teachings from Hindu Mandirs.
Hemangini Patel, B.A.P.S volunteer, said the conference highlighted the crucial role mandirs play— not just as places of worship but as centres that foster resilience, cultural identity, and moral integrity in today's world.
"Lessons on unity, compassion, and personal growth are more important than ever to help individuals and communities thrive," Ms Patel said. "The teachings within Hindu mandirs offer more than just spiritual wisdom."
The conference featured lectures from senior sadhus of BAPS and a dance performance by children. Key discussions focused on how the principles taught in mandirs serve as a foundation for building strong, compassionate communities.
Drawing on his deep experience as a community leader and elected representative, Warren Kirby, State Member of Parliament for Riverstone, spoke about the vital role places of worship play.
"Mandirs are essential in preparing the next generation with the tools they need to face life's challenges," Mr. Kirby said.
"They teach language and culture that has lasted for thousands of years, instilling a strong sense of self."
In recognition of its contributions to the community, BAPS was honoured with over 18 commendation letters. These letters, presented by various organisations, highlight the community's impact and celebrate its efforts to contribute to society positively, spiritually and beyond.
Additionally, community organisations united in a pledge to embody the timeless virtues of love, peace, and harmony represented by Mahant Swami Maharaj. By doing so, they strive through their work to build a more inclusive, united, and compassionate society.
"We are grateful to the various community organisations for this recognition," said Ms Patel.
"With the guidance of our guru, His Holiness Mahant Swami Maharaj, and by closely collaborating with diverse community groups, we look to continue building a stronger, more connected world that fosters unity, compassion, and mutual respect."
