Andrew Charlton MP Delivers on Promise to Support Cultural Unity
In a major win for the Tamil community in Western Sydney, Federal Member for Parramatta Dr Andrew Charlton MP has announced a $7 million election commitment to support the development of a two-storey, state-of-the-art community hall at the Murugan Temple in Mays Hill.
This landmark project, to be delivered under a re-elected Albanese Labor Government, is designed to become a hub for culture, education, and community connection. The proposed facility will include:
An 800-seat multifunction hall
A 600-seat multipurpose space
Foyers, learning rooms, a library, and meeting rooms
Dr Charlton emphasised that the centre will be a vibrant space where Sydney’s growing Tamil community can come together to celebrate, learn, and share their rich cultural heritage.
“This will be a space where culture, learning, and community come together,” said Dr Charlton.
“I promised to help make this vision a reality — and today, I’m delivering.”
“This first-of-its-kind, purpose-built space will be a vibrant home for Tamil culture, celebration and connection.”
The announcement was met with enthusiastic support from community leaders and residents, who have long advocated for a facility of this scale to support intergenerational learning and cultural preservation.
The funding will be implemented in line with the Commonwealth Grants Rules and Principles, ensuring transparency and accountability in the project’s delivery.
This initiative is expected to not only enhance the cultural infrastructure of Parramatta but also strengthen social cohesion in one of Sydney’s most diverse regions.
