Plans for Reimagined Riverside Theatres Move Forward, Community Invited to Have Their Say

Parramatta, NSW – The transformation of the iconic Riverside Theatres is gaining momentum, with plans for the state-significant redevelopment now on public exhibition via the NSW Planning Portal. The City of Parramatta is inviting the community to provide feedback on the proposal that aims to establish a world-class performing arts centre in the heart of Western Sydney.

The ambitious redevelopment includes a 1,500-seat Broadway-style lyric theatre, a refurbished 700-seat Riverside Playhouse, a brand-new 325-seat black-box drama theatre, a state-of-the-art 110-seat digital studio, and a cinema – all accompanied by upgraded public spaces designed to enhance the visitor experience.

Lord Mayor of Parramatta, Clr Martin Zaiter, said the reimagined Riverside Theatres is a cornerstone of the City’s cultural strategy and future vision.

“This critical piece of infrastructure will give the people of Western Sydney the front-row seats they deserve to world-class shows and productions,” Cr Zaiter said. “The redeveloped Riverside Theatres will be one of the main attractions in our cultural precinct, amplifying Parramatta’s unique cultural identity. I look forward to hearing our community’s feedback on our journey to build a world-class performing arts centre.”

Riverside Theatres Director Craig McMaster echoed the Mayor’s sentiments, emphasising the venue’s potential to become a vibrant hub for creativity, both locally and nationally.

“The new theatre will offer expanded performance spaces, cutting-edge technology, sustainable design and modern accessibility features,” Mr McMaster said. “The iconic design respects Parramatta’s rich cultural heritage, integrating contemporary architecture with elements that honour the area’s history, blending the past and present seamlessly.”

The redevelopment also includes enhancements to the riverfront, with improved public access, a new café and bar, and a revitalised natural landscape to complement the cultural experience.

Strategically located near the Powerhouse Parramatta and the popular Eat Street precinct, the new Riverside Theatres will benefit from easy access to trains, ferries, light rail, and buses, reinforcing its status as a cultural cornerstone of the region.

The project is jointly funded by the City of Parramatta and the NSW Government’s Western Sydney Infrastructure Grants Program.
