Kiran Bedi, India's first female officer to join the Indian Police Service (IPS), was honoured on Monday afternoon at the Victorian Parliament in Melbourne. The event, attended by a distinguished gathering of Indian-origin women leaders and Australian politicians, celebrated Bedi’s pioneering contributions to policing, prison reforms, and women's empowerment.
Renowned globally for her groundbreaking work in transforming India's Tihar Jail and for her unyielding commitment to social justice, Bedi has long been a symbol of courage, reform, and leadership. During the event, speakers highlighted her inspirational journey, noting her impact not just within India but around the world, including among diaspora communities in Australia.
"It is a rare privilege to host and honour a figure like Dr. Kiran Bedi, whose life and work continue to ignite positive change globally," said one of the Australian MPs present at the ceremony. Several Indian-Australian community leaders also shared personal reflections, crediting Bedi for inspiring a new generation of women leaders and social reformers.
Bedi, in her address, expressed gratitude for the recognition and encouraged the audience to continue working towards justice, equality, and community service. "Reforms and change are possible when one person stands up with commitment. Each of you can be that person," she said, drawing applause from the attendees.
