Dishonest councillors who use their position for personal benefit will be forced to hand over their ill-gotten gains under tough new laws to be introduced into NSW Parliament.
The sweeping reforms to NSW’s local government integrity regime will help restore confidence in the state’s councils, NSW Premier Mike Baird and Minister for Local Government Paul Toole announced today.
These new measures will ensure councils will no longer be able to decide on planning decisions that councillors have a stake in.
The NSW Government will also place a $2,500 cap on political donations for council elections.

More inmates will participate in literacy, numeracy and training programs as part of reforms to reduce reoffending and improve the performance of the prison system.
Minister for Corrections David Elliott today announced the delivery of education and training courses will be outsourced to specialist training organisations after a review found the current system is not sufficiently focused on job skills.
“Currently there are limited teaching hours available in December, January, April and July but this is not suitable for a prison because we don’t give inmates school holidays,” Mr Elliott said.

Injured workers will be eligible for two new benefits that provide further support for them to return to work.
A $1000 new employment assistance benefit is available to all injured workers who return to work with a new employer. This is set to benefit 11,500 current claimants and can be used for expenses such as child care, clothes, transport and tools.
Up to $8000 is available under the education or training assistance benefit for only those workers with 20 per cent impairment who have been receiving benefits for 78 weeks or more. This is set to benefit 4000 current claimants and can be spent on a training ....
In a NSW first, future primary school teachers are being trained as science and maths specialists to engage younger students in STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) subjects, NSW Premier Mike Baird and Education Minister Adrian Piccoli announced today.

More housing supply is on its way with another near record result for the number of buildings approved in the year to March, today’s ABS figures show.
Treasurer Gladys Berejiklian welcomed the result which showed NSW residential building approvals rising 6.9 per cent in the month of March – well above the national average of 3.7 per cent.

Launching the ReAlarm campaign at NSW Parliament, Mr Elliott said smoke alarms installed 10 years ago when first made compulsory would now need replacing.

New laws will allow NSW Police to detain and question terrorism suspects for up to 14 days, Premier Mike Baird and Deputy Premier Troy Grant announced today.
The Terrorism (Police Powers) Amendment (Investigative Detention) Bill 2016 will be introduced to NSW Parliament this afternoon.

The Turnbull Government will cut the small business company tax rate to 27.5 per cent and make it available to all small companies with an annual turnover of less than $10 million from 1 July 2016. Around 870,000 companies will gain access to the lower rate. Over the next decade, the lower tax rate will be extended to all companies and then progressively reduce to 25 per cent by 1 July 2026.
