NSW seniors will have access to discounted rides thanks to an Australian first alliance between ride-sharing service Uber and the NSW Government, Minister for Ageing John Ajaka today announced.

“My vision is for seniors to live active, healthy and happy lives as they age. To do that, we need to make it easy for seniors to get to where they want and need to,” Mr Ajaka said.

“By partnering with Uber, we are making it easier than ever for seniors to get around NSW. Importantly, the deal is also about giving seniors the opportunity to better understand how they could use Uber to potentially re-enter the workforce and make some money.”

In an Australian first, Uber and Seniors Card will offer card holders:

  • Initial $20 off first UberX ride for new users;
  • Tailored workshops on Uber business model and on how to use the Uber app; and
  • Briefing sessions for Seniors Card members interested in becoming driver partners with Uber

Additional discounts may also apply such as $10 off Uber rides for selected events (for new and existing users).

Uber Australia General Manager David Rohrsheim said the alliance would provide Seniors Card holders with more options in terms of travel and access to flexible work

“We’re proud to be working alongside Seniors Card NSW to extend the economic opportunities provided by ridesharing to hundreds of thousands of its members, and offer seniors citizens a new way to get from A to B, meet people and socialise in the community,” Mr Rohrsheim said.

“For many of our existing senior citizen partners, driving with the Uber platform is a safe and accessible way to top up their pension and help pay the bills.”

There are over 1.4 million people with a NSW Seniors Card, which provides discounts on a wide range of products and services from more than 2,000 individual businesses across the state.

Last year, the NSW Government promised to provide more savings for Seniors Card holders by investing a further $2 million over four years into the Program to expand the number of businesses offering discounts.
