China Poses ‘Biggest Threat’, Expanding Military Presence Around India: U.S. Intelligence Report

Washington/New Delhi, May 25 — A recent U.S. intelligence report has raised serious concerns over China’s growing military assertiveness in South Asia, stating that Beijing is rapidly expanding a strategic military network around India. The report, which includes a detailed assessment of regional security challenges, also highlights Pakistan as a persistent source of instability.

According to the findings, China’s People’s Liberation Army (PLA) is actively enhancing its military infrastructure in neighboring countries, including Myanmar, Sri Lanka, and potentially Pakistan, signaling a coordinated attempt to encircle India strategically.

“The PLA’s presence is not limited to the Indo-Pacific. It is expanding its logistical and intelligence footprint across South Asia through a network of dual-use ports and military partnerships,” the report notes. Intelligence officials warn that these developments could significantly alter the regional balance of power.

The report also sheds light on Pakistan’s continuing role as a security concern, pointing to its internal instability, growing ties with Beijing, and reliance on Chinese military and economic support.

“This China-Pakistan nexus remains a key challenge for India, particularly in light of ongoing border tensions and Pakistan’s use of asymmetric tactics,” the document stated.

India has been increasingly vocal about its security concerns, especially after the deadly Galwan Valley clashes in 2020. In response to the growing strategic threat, New Delhi has stepped up its defense partnerships with the United States, Japan, Australia, and key ASEAN nations.

Strategic analysts believe the report underscores the urgent need for India to bolster its maritime and land-based defenses while deepening cooperation with allies to counterbalance China's expanding influence.

“This is a wake-up call for democratic powers in the region. The chessboard of the Indo-Pacific is shifting, and India must remain agile and well-prepared,” said a senior defense analyst in New Delhi.

The U.S. intelligence community is expected to present further details of the report in a classified briefing to Congressional leaders later this month.
