New Delhi, May 31, 2025 — India is witnessing a fresh spike in COVID-19 infections, with over 2,700 new cases reported in the last 24 hours, alongside seven deaths. Health authorities are on high alert as the virus re-emerges in several parts of the country, primarily affecting Kerala, Maharashtra, and Delhi.
According to the Union Health Ministry, the rise in cases has prompted increased surveillance, testing, and advisory notices in several states. Kerala reported the highest number of new infections, followed closely by Maharashtra and the national capital, Delhi. These three states together account for more than 60% of the newly reported cases.
Medical experts have expressed concern over the sudden rise, noting that although most infections are mild or asymptomatic, the increase in daily hospital visits and ICU admissions is becoming noticeable. Citizens have been advised to follow COVID-appropriate behaviour, including mask-wearing in crowded places and maintaining hand hygiene.
Vaccination drives have resumed in some states for precautionary doses, especially targeting the elderly and immunocompromised individuals. The government has urged people not to panic but to remain vigilant.
So far, there is no confirmation of a new variant being responsible for the surge. Genome sequencing efforts have been intensified to track any mutations that could be behind the uptick in infections.
With the monsoon season approaching and respiratory illnesses expected to rise, health officials stress the importance of early detection and responsible public behavior to prevent further escalation.
