Former Australian Cricketer Michael Slater Jailed for Domestic Violence Offences

Sydney, 23 April 2025 — Former Australian Test cricketer Michael Slater has been sentenced to four years in prison after pleading guilty to multiple domestic violence offences, including unlawful stalking, assault, and breaking and entering. However, the 55-year-old is expected to be released shortly due to time already served in custody, with the remaining sentence suspended for five years.

The offences occurred between December 2023 and April 2024. Slater was charged with stalking or intimidation, breaking into a dwelling with intent at night, common assault, assault occasioning bodily harm, choking or suffocation, and contravening a domestic violence order.

This is not the first time Slater has faced domestic violence allegations. In 2022, similar charges were dismissed on mental health grounds by a Sydney local court. At the time, the court was informed that Slater had been diagnosed with major depressive disorder, alcohol addiction, borderline personality disorder, and ADHD. He was placed under a 12-month treatment plan under medical supervision.

Slater, who made his international debut in 1993, played 73 Test matches and scored 5,312 runs at an average of 42.83. He also represented Australia in 42 One Day Internationals before retiring from professional cricket in 2004. Post-retirement, he pursued a successful career in television commentary.

The case has once again raised concerns about mental health and domestic violence within the sporting community.
