Johannesburg, June 2, 2025 — South African wicketkeeper-batter Heinrich Klaasen has officially announced his retirement from international cricket, drawing the curtain on a seven-year-long career that saw him emerge as one of the Proteas' most impactful middle-order batters in the limited-overs format.
The 33-year-old made the announcement through an emotional social media post, stating that the decision was not taken lightly, but was made with the long-term interests of his family in mind. "After deep reflection, I have decided to retire from international cricket. I leave with a heart full of gratitude and peace. It’s time for me to prioritize my family and open a new chapter in life,” Klaasen wrote.
Klaasen made his international debut in 2018 and quickly rose through the ranks to become a dependable finisher for South Africa, especially in white-ball cricket. He played 48 ODIs, scoring 2,141 runs at an average of 43.69, including four centuries — with a career-best 174 — and 42 T20Is, amassing 1,000 runs at a strike rate exceeding 140.
Known for his powerful hitting and calm temperament under pressure, Klaasen was a key figure in South Africa’s campaigns at several ICC tournaments, including the 2023 Cricket World Cup and the 2024 T20 World Cup. Despite limited opportunities in Test cricket, he played four matches between 2019 and 2023 before retiring from the format in January 2024.
While Klaasen bids farewell to the international stage, he will continue to be active in franchise cricket. He recently played for Sunrisers Hyderabad in the IPL, where he delivered a memorable 105* off just 39 balls against Kolkata Knight Riders — a testament to his enduring form and power-hitting prowess.
