In a significant diplomatic endorsement, Panama has openly supported India's long-standing campaign for a permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC). The statement of support came following a high-level meeting between Panamanian Foreign Minister Javier Martínez Acha and a visiting Indian delegation led by veteran Indian diplomat and Member of Parliament, Dr. Shashi Tharoor.
During the dialogue, Dr. Tharoor presented photographic evidence to Minister Acha showing Pakistani military officials attending funerals of United Nations-designated terrorists killed in Operation Sindoor. The visuals were part of India’s effort to highlight state-sponsored terrorism and advocate for stronger international accountability.
Speaking to the media, Foreign Minister Javier Martínez Acha said,
“India deserves a permanent seat at the United Nations Security Council. The relationship between Panama and India is grounded in mutual respect, shared democratic values, and a collective vision for peace, prosperity, and inclusive development.”
Minister Acha condemned the recent terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu & Kashmir, where 26 civilians were killed. He reiterated Panama’s commitment to fighting global terrorism and denounced any nation that provides sanctuary to terrorists.
“We stand in solidarity with India in its fight against terrorism. Any country that offers safe havens to terrorists must be condemned unequivocally,” he asserted.
During the meeting, Dr. Tharoor emphasized the urgency of unified international action against terrorism:
“Terrorism is not a solution to international conflicts. Sending terrorists across borders is completely unacceptable. Those who protect, fund, arm, and guide these criminals must be held accountable.”
Speaking to ANI after the bilateral meeting, Minister Acha further underlined that Panama cannot tolerate nations that sponsor terrorism.
“We are a democracy and so is India — the world’s largest democracy. We must work together to uphold democratic values and stand against all forms of terrorism.”
The Indian delegation’s visit comes at a time when New Delhi is actively engaging with global partners to garner support for its UNSC aspirations, amidst growing concerns about cross-border terrorism and global security.
This strong backing from Panama adds momentum to India's efforts, as it continues to advocate for reforms within the United Nations system to reflect contemporary global realities.
