Dhaka, June 2, 2025 — A fresh controversy has erupted in Bangladesh after the country's central bank, Bangladesh Bank, issued new currency notes that do not feature the image of the nation’s founding father, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. Known as Bangabandhu (Friend of Bengal), Sheikh Mujib has long been a prominent figure on the country’s banknotes, and his sudden absence has stirred political and public outcry.
The newly introduced notes, which were unveiled this week as part of a redesign and modernization initiative by the central bank, instead display national landmarks, including the Padma Bridge and various government infrastructure projects. However, the omission of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s image — historically present as a symbolic tribute to Bangladesh’s independence movement — has been met with backlash from opposition parties, historians, and pro-liberation groups.
Critics allege that the move is an attempt to erase the legacy of the leader credited with steering Bangladesh toward independence from Pakistan in 1971. Members of the ruling Awami League, founded by Sheikh Mujib himself, have also voiced dissatisfaction and called for a review of the central bank's decision.
In response to the growing criticism, a spokesperson for Bangladesh Bank clarified that the redesign was “purely aesthetic and technical in nature” and that there is “no political motive” behind the new notes. The bank has not ruled out the possibility of featuring Sheikh Mujib’s image on other denominations or future series of currency.
Despite the explanation, the controversy has added to political tensions ahead of upcoming national elections. Public protests have already begun in several parts of the country, demanding the restoration of Bangabandhu’s image on all currency notes as a matter of national pride and historical respect.
As the issue gains momentum, it remains to be seen whether the Bangladesh Bank will revise its decision or stand firm on the new design. The incident underscores the deep emotional and political connection between the people of Bangladesh and the legacy of their founding father.
