Taylor, Tehan, Paterson Eye Key Roles as Coalition Prepares New Frontbench

Canberra, 25 May 2025 — A reshuffle within the Coalition’s frontbench is imminent as senior figures from both the Liberal and National parties negotiate key shadow cabinet roles. According to sources close to the party room discussions, Deputy Liberal Leader Sussan Ley and Nationals Leader David Littleproud have reached an agreement that will allocate six shadow cabinet positions to the Nationals.

The impending announcement is expected to elevate several prominent Liberal figures, with former Treasurer Angus Taylor tipped to take on the high-profile portfolio of either foreign affairs or defence. Taylor’s appointment would mark a significant shift, positioning him as a key voice in shaping Australia’s international and security policy under the Opposition banner.

Meanwhile, other senior Liberals, including Dan Tehan and James Paterson, are also being closely considered for prominent shadow roles. Tehan, a former trade and education minister, is expected to be given a leading economic or strategic portfolio, while Paterson, known for his strong stance on national security and cyber policy, may be appointed to a position reflecting those credentials.

The reshuffle follows weeks of internal consultations as the Coalition prepares to sharpen its policy focus and public messaging in the lead-up to the next federal election. With Peter Dutton at the helm, the Opposition is aiming to present a united and refreshed frontbench capable of challenging the Albanese government across a range of critical national issues.
