Australian Cricket Star Steve Smith Announces Retirement from ODIs

Sydney, March 5, 2025 – Australian cricket legend and former captain Steve Smith has announced his retirement from One-Day International (ODI) cricket, marking the end of an illustrious 14-year career in the format. The decision comes after Australia's semi-final loss to India in the ICC Champions Trophy.

Smith, 35, made the announcement following the match, stating that it was the right time to step aside and allow a new generation of players to prepare for the 2027 Cricket World Cup.

"Now is a great opportunity for others to step in and build towards the next World Cup. I’ve had an incredible time playing ODIs for Australia, but I feel it’s the right moment to move on," Smith said.

A Glorious ODI Career

Since making his ODI debut in 2010, Smith has played 170 matches, scoring 5,800 runs at an average of 43.28, including 12 centuries and 35 half-centuries. His impact was crucial in Australia’s World Cup victories in 2015 and 2023, solidifying his place as one of the finest batsmen of his generation.

In his final ODI match against India, Smith played a brilliant knock of 73 runs, showcasing the class and determination that defined his career.

Tributes from the Cricketing World

Tributes poured in from across the cricketing world, with Cricket Australia’s Chief Executive Todd Greenberg praising Smith’s contributions.

"Steve has been a pillar of Australian cricket, both as a player and a leader. His ability to perform under pressure and his tactical acumen will be remembered for years to come," Greenberg said.

Former Australian captain Ricky Ponting also lauded Smith’s career, stating, "He is one of the best we've ever had. His ability to adapt and excel in all conditions made him a true great of the game."

Future in Test and T20 Cricket

While retiring from ODIs, Smith has confirmed that he will continue to play Test cricket and T20 Internationals. With key Test series ahead, including the World Test Championship final and the Ashes against England, Smith remains committed to helping Australia maintain its dominance in the longest format of the game.

"I still have a lot to contribute in Test cricket, and I’m excited about what’s ahead. The Ashes and the Test Championship final are major goals for me," Smith said.

End of an Era

Smith’s departure from ODIs marks the end of an era in Australian cricket. Having led Australia through highs and lows, including a return to leadership following the Sandpapergate scandal, he leaves behind a legacy of resilience, excellence, and dedication.
