Melbourne witnessed a remarkable cultural and linguistic milestone as 1,400 individuals from Australia and New Zealand gathered on 1 March 2025 for the "Day of Divine Wisdom"—a celebration dedicated to preserving and promoting Sanskrit, the world's oldest known language.
In a powerful display of commitment, participants memorised and recited 315 verses from Satsang Diksha, a revered Sanskrit scripture authored by His Holiness Mahant Swami Maharaj. This collective effort highlights the enduring influence of Sanskrit and its teachings, which continue to inspire moral living, discipline, devotion, and community service—values deeply embedded in Australian society.
Sanskrit, often referred to as the mother of many languages, has significantly shaped modern linguistics. Manav Patel, a participant, emphasised its impact on contemporary speech.
"Sanskrit is not only one of the oldest languages but has influenced many modern languages, including English. Words like 'karma,' 'yoga,' and 'guru' are testament to its lasting legacy," Mr Patel said.
The Vedas, the oldest known scriptures in human history, are written in Sanskrit and have laid the foundation for philosophical and spiritual thought across cultures. Through events like the "Day of Divine Wisdom," the language is not only being preserved but also embraced by a new generation eager to connect with its profound heritage.
The event was part of Mahant Swami Maharaj’s ongoing six-week visit to Australia, themed "Celebrate Peace." Since 12 February 2025, His Holiness has been leading spiritual, cultural, and social initiatives aimed at uniting Hindus and people of diverse backgrounds in the pursuit of harmony and joy.
Speaking at the event, a spokesperson reflected on the significance of Sanskrit beyond mere words. "Sanskrit is not just a language—it carries wisdom and values. By preserving it, we ensure its teachings are passed on for generations."
The event brought together people of all ages, fostering a deep sense of connection to their cultural roots while strengthening Australia’s rich multicultural fabric. Families gathered to study and recite verses, bridging generational gaps and reinforcing the importance of tradition in contemporary society.
The celebration also showcased how ancient languages and cultural traditions continue to unite communities and contribute to the broader Australian identity.
Mahant Swami Maharaj is the sixth spiritual leader of BAPS Swaminarayan Sanstha and an embodiment of Bhagwan Swaminarayan’s teachings. At 92, his wisdom, humility, and compassion continue to inspire millions worldwide. His visit to Australia includes historic festival celebrations and the consecration of new religious spaces that will support the growing Hindu diaspora.
Bochasanwasi Shri Akshar Purushottam Swaminarayan Sanstha (BAPS) is a global Hindu organisation rooted in the Vedas. Since its establishment in 1984, BAPS Australia has expanded to include mandirs in all major cities and over 50 assembly centres across metropolitan and regional areas. The organisation, in collaboration with BAPS Charities, actively supports local communities through various humanitarian efforts, including food donation drives and healthcare initiatives.
The "Day of Divine Wisdom" was a powerful reminder that language and culture transcend borders. By coming together to honour Sanskrit and its teachings, participants not only preserved an ancient tradition but also strengthened the bonds of community, ensuring that its wisdom will continue to enlighten generations to come.
