ICC Highlights Cricket’s Role in Social Inclusion on International Day of Sport for Development and Peace

Sydney, 7 April 2025 – As the world came together to observe the International Day of Sport for Development and Peace on Sunday, April 6, the International Cricket Council (ICC) marked the occasion by celebrating the sport’s extraordinary power to foster inclusion, unity, and social progress.

With the global theme “Levelling the Playing Field: Sport for Social Inclusion”, the ICC spotlighted groundbreaking initiatives from its Member Federations that have leveraged cricket as a unifying force to uplift disadvantaged communities, promote gender equality, and break down social and cultural barriers.

Cricket Switzerland’s Integration Through Cricket
In Switzerland, the Integration Through Cricket initiative was launched in response to the increasing number of vulnerable Afghan refugees. Through engaging cricket clinics, friendly matches, and enriching cultural exchanges — including language workshops and community meals — over 200 young refugees have benefitted. Cricket here has become more than a sport; it's a bridge to belonging and a path to new beginnings.

Cricket España’s No Boundaries Women’s League
Further west in Europe, Cricket España’s No Boundaries Women’s Franchise League has transformed the women’s game. Launched in 2024, the league brought together players of all levels from six Spanish cities to compete for the National Women’s Champion title. With plans to expand into schools and grassroots clubs in 2025, the league is not only creating opportunities for multicultural participation but also building a pipeline for national talent — with several players now representing Spain at the international level.

Bhutan’s ‘Cricket for Change/All’ with UNICEF
In Asia, Bhutan Cricket, in partnership with UNICEF Bhutan, continues its impactful Cricket for Change/All programme. The initiative combines cricket coaching with education in child protection, gender equality, and life skills. Thousands of children — especially girls and those from remote or marginalized communities — have already benefitted. With expansion plans into rural regions, Bhutan’s model is a shining example of cricket’s potential to shape future-ready citizens.

ICC Chair Jay Shah Commends Global Efforts
ICC Chair Jay Shah praised the initiatives, stating:

“The ICC remains committed to harnessing the power of cricket to drive positive change, and the International Day of Sport for Development and Peace is an important milestone to reflect and celebrate the outstanding work being done globally. I congratulate Cricket Switzerland, Cricket España, Bhutan Cricket, and all our active members for their inspiring efforts.”

These initiatives reaffirm the transformative impact of sport — particularly cricket — in promoting peace, fostering integration, and nurturing the next generation across cultural and geographical boundaries.
