UK High Court Denies Bail to Fugitive Nirav Modi, Cites His Reluctance to Return to India

London, May 23, 2025 — The British High Court has once again rejected the bail plea of fugitive diamond merchant Nirav Modi, stating that he is determined to avoid extradition to India under any circumstances.

Modi, who is facing charges related to the $2 billion Punjab National Bank fraud case, has been held in custody in the UK since his arrest in March 2019. The latest ruling comes after Modi appealed for bail on grounds that his continued detention was affecting his mental health and access to legal counsel.

However, the High Court dismissed his arguments, noting a clear risk that Modi would attempt to flee justice. The court observed that the accused has repeatedly shown an unwillingness to return to India to face legal proceedings, reinforcing concerns about his intentions if granted bail.

India has been seeking Modi's extradition to stand trial for money laundering, criminal conspiracy, and fraud. The case has drawn international attention due to its scale and involvement of high-level banking officials.

Legal experts say today's decision strengthens the Indian government's position and is a significant step forward in the long-standing extradition process.

Modi continues to deny all charges and is expected to appeal the decision in the UK Supreme Court
