Srinagar, May 21:
In a significant move to ensure a peaceful and terror-free Amarnath Yatra, Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha chaired a high-level Unified Command meeting in Srinagar on Tuesday. The meeting focused on the current security situation in Jammu and Kashmir and reviewed preparations for the annual pilgrimage, which is set to begin on July 3.
Lieutenant Governor Sinha directed all security and intelligence agencies to work in close coordination to eliminate any threat of terrorism during the yatra. “Every possible measure must be taken to ensure that this year’s Amarnath Yatra is completely free from the shadow of terrorism,” he said, emphasizing the importance of securing both the route and the pilgrimage sites.
The Lieutenant Governor also lauded the efforts of the armed forces, Jammu and Kashmir Police, and other security agencies for the successful execution of Operation Sindoor, which thwarted multiple terror attempts supported from across the border. He called for continued stringent action against terrorist operatives and their local supporters, also known as Over Ground Workers (OGWs).
“Eliminating the infrastructure of terrorism from every corner of the Union Territory is our top priority,” said Sinha. “It is equally important to provide a sense of complete safety to the common citizen.”
The meeting was attended by key officials, including Northern Army Commander Lieutenant General Prateek Sharma, Chief Secretary Atal Dulloo, Director General of Police Nalin Prabhat, and senior officers from various security and administrative agencies. The team conducted a detailed review of the post-Pahalgam attack scenario and discussed strategies to strengthen the security grid.
Chief Minister Omar Abdullah also addressed concerns following the recent terror attack in Pahalgam, which had adversely impacted tourism in the region. He assured that the government is taking all necessary steps to restore confidence and ensure the smooth and secure conduct of the Amarnath Yatra.
“After the Pahalgam incident, restoring the faith of tourists and pilgrims is essential. Strong security arrangements are being put in place, and the yatra’s safe conduct is now our top priority,” said the Chief Minister.
With lakhs of devotees expected to participate in the sacred pilgrimage to the Amarnath cave shrine, the administration's renewed focus on security aims to reassure pilgrims and boost tourism in Jammu and Kashmir.
