The NSW Government has ordered an independent review of sentencing for murder and manslaughter offences, including those involving domestic and family violence.
Attorney General Mark Speakman and Minister for the Prevention of Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Pru Goward said the Sentencing Council review follows community concerns about the sentencing of domestic violence killers.

In the Land and Environment Court today, Mr Paul Mouawad pleaded guilty to two charges brought by the NSW Environment Protection Authority of knowingly supplying false or misleading information in relation to the transport and disposal of waste.
The EPA alleges that in June and July 2016, Mr Mouawad and Aussie Earthmovers Pty Ltd removed about 1,400 tonnes of asbestos contaminated soil from a building site in Darlington in central Sydney.
The EPA also alleges Mr Mouawad and Aussie Earthmovers knowingly supplied false information about where the asbestos contaminated soil was transported to and disposed of.

NSW local councils are being encouraged to work with people who have unpaid rates to get on payment plans instead of taking ratepayers to court.
Local Government Minister Gabrielle Upton and Attorney General Mark Speakman today released new Debt Management and Hardship Guidelines and called on all councils in NSW to review their policies and procedures to treat ratepayers more fairly.

NSW Year 9 students have shot to first place in the nation for numeracy, as well as leading spelling results, after an excellent State performance across all year levels in the 2017 NAPLAN tests.

NSW has experienced yet another consecutive month of record housing approvals with more than 71,600 residential buildings approved in 2016-17, according to the latest data from the Australia Bureau of Statistics (ABS) today.

Energy retailers will focus on helping NSW customers facing hardship get the best deal possible following a meeting with Energy and Utilities Minister Don Harwin.
Minister Harwin held a two-hour roundtable with the state’s biggest energy retailers today, alongside consumer advocates and the Energy and Water Ombudsman.

NSW consumers are once again the most confident in the nation according to the latest Westpac Melbourne Institute Index of Consumer Sentiment.
While the Index fell in QLD and SA and was flat in WA, consumer confidence in NSW rose 2.4 per cent to 106.4 in March, well above the national average of 99.7, and the highest of all states for the fifth consecutive month.

Women in regional NSW are securing jobs at record rates according to new data from the Department of Industry that shows 37,000 women secured work in the year to July 2016 (12 month moving average), compared to an average of 9,500 a year over recent years.
Minister for Skills, Regional Development and Small Business John Barilaro said the results also show employment participation rates for women in regional NSW in July 2016 reached 55.4 per cent, well above the long run average of 52.1 per cent.
