Once-in-a-generation reforms to the state’s strata title laws are a step closer today, with Minister for Innovation and Better Regulation Victor Dominello introducing two bills into Parliament containing more than 90 changes to the existing laws.

 

Key changes include:

  • Providing a flexible and fair mechanism for collective sale and renewal;
  • Making it easier for owners to complete cosmetic and minor renovations;
  • Modernising rules to help prevent proxy farming;
  • Introducing a defects bond to fix building defects early in new developments;

    Hunter organisations will receive over $1.6 million in NSW Government funding to support high quality and innovative arts and cultural initiatives, Deputy Premier and Minister for the Arts Troy Grant announced today.

    Leading organisations funded include Newcastle, Lake Macquarie and Maitland Art Galleries, the Hunter Writers’ Centre, The Lock-Up arts space and Tantrum Theatre Co-operative.

    Minister for Disability Services John Ajaka today announced that the NSW Government is seeking expressions of interest (EOI) from non-government organisations to build and operate disability housing to replace the remaining large residential centres in the Hunter region.

     

    The EOI is seeking privately financed proposals from capable organisations to build new, more homelike accommodation for 390 people currently living in the large residential centres.

    SOUTH WEST RAIL LINK: SOON TO HEAD NORTH AND EAST, WITH MORE SERVICES

    Minister for Transport and Infrastructure Andrew Constance has announced peak services would be doubled on the South West Rail Link by the end of the year, and customers would have direct access to more destinations across Sydney.

     

    The $2.1 billion South West Rail Link opened in February this year, ahead of schedule and $300 million under budget.

     

    Mr Constance said the rail line was proving popular with locals in Sydney's fastest growing region, with more than 1,500 train journeys every weekday from new stations at Leppington and Edmondson Park.

    NSW has recorded the lowest unemployment rate of any state and has had more than half of the nation’s jobs growth over the past 12 months, today’s ABS figures have confirmed.

     

    Treasurer Gladys Berejiklian has welcomed the news as further proof that NSW is the number one economy in Australia.

     

    “NSW is again outperforming the rest of the nation, with our unemployment rate falling to 5.9 per cent in September – below the national average,” Ms Berejiklian said.

     

    The NSW unemployment rate has been at or below the national rate for the last 23 consecutive months.

    New teachers will be better prepared for the classroom under the latest NSW Government initiative to strengthen the training of future teachers.

     

    Minister for Education Adrian Piccoli has announced a new agreement with the 11 universities in NSW that provide the majority of professional experience placements in NSW public schools.

    SURPLUS GROWS AND NET DEBT FALLS FOR 2014-15

    NSW Treasurer Gladys Berejiklian today released the final results for 2014-15 revealing a surplus of $2.9 billion – an improvement of $823 million since the June 2015 Budget forecast.

     

    Ms Berejiklian said the Total State Sector Accounts (TSSA) confirmed that the NSW Government’s hard work to bring the Budget back under control was paying off.

    Minister for Innovation and Better Regulation Victor Dominello today issued a strong warning about working safely around forklifts.

     

    Between July 2012 and July 2014, 1,360 workers were injured in forklift incidents, including five fatalities, at a cost of $15.8 million to the NSW workers compensation scheme.

     

    “Creating a safe workplace should be the number one priority for every business,” Mr Dominello said.

     

    “Workplace incidents involving forklifts often result in serious injuries and operators need to be conscious of pedestrians at all times.”

    ENERGY SAVINGS SCHEME WILL REDUCE LIVING COSTS

    The NSW Government is improving its Energy Savings Scheme (ESS) to make it more affordable for households and businesses to purchase and install energy efficient products.

      Minister for Industry, Resources and Energy, Anthony Roberts, today introduced legislation into State Parliament to put greater downward pressure on energy prices.

       

      The Energy Legislation Amendment (Electricity and Gas Pricing) Bill 2015 is the next step in the deregulation of retail energy prices.
