TV News in Punjabi added to SBS TV’s World Watch Schedule

From October 4 SBS will begin broadcasting television news in Punjabi, from Indian network PTC News, at 11:35am daily on SBS 2.

This new addition to the World Watch news service will also be available daily through SBS on Demand (sbs.com.au/ondemand) and the SBS Punjabi webpage, sbs.com.au/Punjabi.

Sydneysiders will get the opportunity to say farewell to buses on George Street when a selection of heritage vehicles travel down Sydney’s main street for the final time.

Minister for Transport and Infrastructure Andrew Constance said from midday until 5pm this Saturday, customers will be able to go back in time by travelling on some of the city’s oldest buses - some dating back to the 1930s.

NSW GAS PLAN PEL BUY-BACK SCHEME

Minister for Industry, Resources and Energy, Anthony Roberts, today announced the closure of the Petroleum Exploration License (PEL) buy-back scheme, under the NSW Gas Plan.

 

In the ten months of the scheme, the NSW Government redeemed and cancelled 16 PELs.

 

Mr Roberts said each PEL was bought-back at a cost of $212,500 under Action 4 of the NSW Gas Plan.

BUILDING BOOM CONTINUES ACROSS NSW

Planning Minister Rob Stokes today welcomed Australian Bureau of Statistics figures showing more record-breaking numbers for housing approvals.

 

Nearly 62,865 homes were given the green light in the 12 months to August. This is an increase of 19 per cent on the corresponding period last year.

IMPROVED PLANNING TO UNLOCK CHILDCARE PLACES

Planning Minister Rob Stokes has welcomed the formation of a new Joint Working Group, which will look into making it easier to establish new childcare services.

 

Mr Stokes said the working group has representatives from the Department of Planning and Environment, the NSW Department of Education and the Office of Local Government to explore simplifying the planning system as it applies to childcare centres.

PARRAMATTA’S longest serving councillor Paul Garrard has regained the mayoral chains after being elected as Lord Mayor at Tuesday night’s election.

 

With the support of Liberal councillors, the independent councillor defeated Labor councillor Pierre Esber via a show of hands vote.

It will be his sixth of term as Lord Mayor, and will be his first term since 2009-10.

Cr Garrard was elected to Parramatta City Council in September 1974 and has served five terms as Lord Mayor.

A winding stream that changes shape and form, areas of green open space and public art installations are among the features of a concept design for Parramatta Square’s public domain area which is now on public exhibition.

 

Parramatta City Council last night voted to endorse the Draft Concept Design for a four-week exhibition period to seek feedback from the community and stakeholders.

 

The $35 million investment by Council is central to the $2 billion Parramatta Square redevelopment that will include commercial, residential, educational and civic buildings.

FUNDING TO SUPPORT BETTER PARKS IN SYDNEY

Planning Minister Rob Stokes has welcomed a new 1.5km path in the Australian Botanic Garden, which was funded by a NSW Government grant.

 

Inspecting the new Botanic Garden trail, Mr Stokes said the new shared pathway for cyclists and pedestrians was funded by a $445,000 Metropolitan Greenspace Program grant. The project is the first section completed in the garden and forms part of the larger 14km Macarthur Regional Recreation Trail being developed.

 

“Spring is a perfect time to get outdoors and enjoy the beautiful open spaces around Sydney like the Australian Botanic Garden here at Mount Annan,” Mr Stokes said.

FIRST LARGE-SCALE STUDY INTO KIDS IN CARE

NSW GOVERNMENT EASES COST BURDEN FOR PATIENTS WITH CANCER AND CHRONIC CONDITIONS

Patients with cancer and other chronic conditions will receive a financial boost under a plan to scrap co-payments on some medicines.

 

The NSW Government will cover the co-payments for public hospital patients receiving Section 100 (s100) Highly Specialised Drugs and Section 100 injectable and infusible chemotherapy medicines.

 

The change - taking effect on October 1 - will save patients with cancer or other chronic diseases an average $1,400 per year.
