In a fresh twist to the ongoing turmoil within the Liberal Party, Northern Territory Senator Jacinta Nampijinpa Price has resigned from the shadow ministry after refusing to back Opposition Leader Sussan Ley’s leadership.
According to reports, Sussan Ley asked Price to step aside. Price agreed to the request and released a statement confirming her decision, while maintaining her stance.
“I have accepted the Leader’s decision. I reiterated that my remarks were not intended to cause offence. However, some colleagues ignored the core point I was raising and instead indulged in agenda-driven media commentary,” Price said.
The fallout began last week when Price suggested in an ABC interview that the Labor Party had allowed “higher levels of Indian migrants” to secure votes. The comments drew sharp criticism both inside and outside the party.
Price, however, stressed that she had no ill will toward the Indian community or any other migrant group, and insisted she never intended to be disparaging.
NSW Liberal leader Mark Speakman and Shadow Attorney-General Julian Leeser both issued apologies to the Indian community on Price’s behalf. Price herself, however, refused to apologise, continuing to stand firm on her position.
Political observers say this development highlights widening rifts within the Liberal Party. Already facing questions over her authority, Sussan Ley’s leadership may be further weakened by Price’s exit, underscoring the deep divisions plaguing the Opposition.

ऑस्ट्रेलियाई राजनीति में चल रहे उथल-पुथल के बीच, नॉर्दर्न टेरिटरी की सीनेटर जैसिंटा नाम्पिजिन्पा प्राइस ने शैडो मंत्रालय से इस्तीफ़ा दे दिया है। यह कदम तब आया जब उन्होंने विपक्ष की नेता सुसान लेय के नेतृत्व का समर्थन करने से इनकार कर दिया।
सूत्रों के मुताबिक़, सुसान लेय ने प्राइस से पद छोड़ने को कहा था। उन्होंने इस पर सहमति जताई और बयान जारी कर कहा कि वे अपने रुख़ पर कायम हैं।
“मैंने नेता का निर्णय स्वीकार किया है। मैंने यह भी स्पष्ट किया कि मेरी टिप्पणी का मक़सद किसी समुदाय को ठेस पहुँचाना नहीं था। लेकिन मेरे सहयोगियों ने मेरे मुख्य संदेश की अनदेखी की और मीडिया की एजेंडा-चालित व्याख्या में उलझ गए,” प्राइस ने कहा।
पिछले सप्ताह, प्राइस ने एबीसी इंटरव्यू में कहा था कि लेबर पार्टी ने “भारतीय प्रवासियों की संख्या बढ़ाकर वोट बैंक साधा है”। इस बयान के बाद पार्टी के अंदर और बाहर कड़ी आलोचना हुई।
हालांकि उन्होंने दोहराया कि उनका मक़सद भारतीय समुदाय का अपमान करना नहीं था और उनके प्रति कोई दुर्भावना नहीं है।
एनएसडब्ल्यू लिबरल नेता मार्क स्पीकमैन और शैडो अटॉर्नी-जनरल जूलियन लीसर ने इस बयान के लिए भारतीय समुदाय से माफ़ी मांगी थी। लेकिन जैसिंटा प्राइस ने माफ़ी मांगने से इंकार कर दिया और अपने रुख़ पर डटी रहीं।
राजनीतिक विश्लेषकों का मानना है कि यह घटनाक्रम लिबरल पार्टी में गहरी दरार का संकेत है। सुसान लेय पहले से ही नेतृत्व संकट से जूझ रही हैं और अब प्राइस के हटने से उनकी स्थिति और कमजोर हो सकती है।
