Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has called on Liberal Senator Jacinta Nampijinpa Price to apologise after comments she made about Indian migrants sparked widespread criticism.
Speaking to ABC Radio National Breakfast this morning, Mr Albanese said the Indian Australian community was “hurting” and stressed their vital role in the nation’s success.
“The Indian Australian community has made our nation stronger. They contribute to our economy, our communities. They're a vital part of modern Australia,” he said.
“I just say to the Indian community: you're valued, you're welcome here, you make our country stronger by being here. And thank you for everything that you do to make Australia a better place.”
The Prime Minister said Senator Price’s comments were “not true” and had caused unnecessary division. “Of course she should apologise for the hurt that has been caused — and her own colleagues are saying that. But even more importantly, leaders in the community are asking for that as well,” he said.
When asked whether Deputy Liberal Leader Sussan Ley should apologise on Senator Price’s behalf, Mr Albanese declined to weigh in, saying it was “a decision for Sussan Ley.”
He emphasised his focus was on “bringing people together” and “rejecting division,” adding: “The job of people in public office is to bring people together, and that is what I'll be focused on. I'll leave the Coalition to fight themselves.”

प्रधानमंत्री एंथनी अल्बनीज़ ने लिबरल सीनेटर जैसिंटा नम्पिजिन्पा प्राइस से भारतीय प्रवासियों पर दिए गए विवादित बयान को लेकर माफी मांगने का आग्रह किया है।
आज सुबह एबीसी रेडियो नेशनल ब्रेकफास्ट से बातचीत में प्रधानमंत्री ने कहा कि भारतीय ऑस्ट्रेलियाई समुदाय “आहत” है और देश की मजबूती में उनका योगदान असाधारण है।
“भारतीय ऑस्ट्रेलियाई समुदाय ने हमारे राष्ट्र को मजबूत बनाया है। वे हमारी अर्थव्यवस्था और समाज में योगदान देते हैं। वे आधुनिक ऑस्ट्रेलिया का एक अहम हिस्सा हैं,” उन्होंने कहा।
“मैं भारतीय समुदाय से कहना चाहता हूँ: आप मूल्यवान हैं, आपका यहाँ स्वागत है। आप हमारे देश को और मजबूत बनाते हैं। ऑस्ट्रेलिया को बेहतर बनाने के लिए आपके हर योगदान के लिए धन्यवाद।”
प्रधानमंत्री ने कहा कि सीनेटर प्राइस की टिप्पणियाँ “सही नहीं” हैं और इससे समाज में अनावश्यक विभाजन हुआ है। “उन्हें निश्चित रूप से उस चोट के लिए माफी मांगनी चाहिए जो हुई है — और उनके अपने सहयोगी भी यही कह रहे हैं। इससे भी बढ़कर, समुदाय के नेता भी इसकी मांग कर रहे हैं,” उन्होंने कहा।
जब उनसे पूछा गया कि क्या लिबरल उपनेता सुसान लेह को सीनेटर प्राइस की ओर से माफी मांगनी चाहिए, तो श्री अल्बनीज़ ने इसे उनका “निर्णय” बताया।
उन्होंने ज़ोर दिया कि उनका ध्यान “लोगों को एकजुट करने” और “विभाजन को अस्वीकार करने” पर है। “सार्वजनिक पद पर बैठे लोगों का काम लोगों को साथ लाना है और मैं इसी पर ध्यान केंद्रित करूंगा। मैं विपक्ष को खुद से लड़ने दूँगा,” प्रधानमंत्री ने कहा।
