Burnie, 2 April 2025 – Healthcare access in Burnie is set for a major uplift, with the Dutton Coalition Government pledging $8 million towards the establishment of the Burnie Health Hub—a transformative, integrated medical facility designed to address pressing community health needs.
Part of a broader $24 million investment, the project will be jointly funded by the State Government and the private sector. The Health Hub will feature a Medicare Urgent Care and GP clinic, a pharmacy operating 7 days a week, State Government health services, and wrap-around services delivered by not-for-profit organisations.
The project has been championed by local health professionals Dr Jerome Muir-Wilson, a GP, and Jack Muir-Wilson, a pharmacist, whose vision and dedication have been instrumental in bringing this concept to life.
Senator the Hon Anne Ruston, Shadow Minister for Health and Aged Care, praised the initiative, saying, “This new funding will ensure that the Burnie Health Hub becomes a cornerstone of healthcare delivery in the region—improving access to timely, essential care and enhancing health outcomes for the Burnie community.”
Senator Ruston also pointed to concerning figures showing that Braddon's GP bulk billing rate has dropped from 88.2% under the Coalition to 83.4% under Labor, making GP services less affordable for many families.
“The Burnie Health Hub will help reverse this decline and provide much-needed relief to locals struggling to access affordable healthcare. This is about bridging the gap Labor has created,” she said.
Liberal Candidate for Braddon, Mal Hingston, reiterated the Coalition’s commitment to health in the region. “We’ve already taken key steps with the Urgent Care Clinic in Burnie, but we know that’s not enough. The Burnie Health Hub is the next critical piece in rebuilding accessible, quality healthcare in North West Tasmania,” Mr Hingston said.
“I’m committed to ensuring Braddon residents get the services they need and deserve—close to home and without financial strain,” he added.
The Burnie Health Hub represents a significant step forward in delivering on the Coalition’s pledge to make high-quality, affordable healthcare accessible to all Australians, regardless of where they live.
