Parramatta, April 2025 – The City of Parramatta has achieved a remarkable feat at the 2025 IPWEA NSW & ACT Annual Engineering Excellence Awards, clinching two prestigious honours for its groundbreaking infrastructure projects – the PHIVE Community Cultural and Civic Hub and the Alfred Street Pedestrian & Cyclist Bridge.
Recognised for their exceptional design, sustainability, and community impact, both projects emerged victorious in their respective categories, standing tall among the state’s most innovative public works.
City of Parramatta Lord Mayor, Cr Martin Zaiter, hailed the dual win as a proud moment for the city.
“The Alfred Street Pedestrian Cyclist Walkway Bridge and PHIVE are not just engineering feats; they are landmarks that reflect our vision for a vibrant and connected Parramatta,” Cr Zaiter said.
“Both projects embody what Parramatta stands for – a city that is smart, bold, connected and future-focused. These awards are a testament to the hard work of our teams and our unwavering commitment to delivering spaces that inspire and connect our community.”
The Alfred Street Bridge, Australia's first true diagonal arch bridge, won in the New or Improved Techniques category. Spanning 82 metres across the Parramatta River, the $19.22 million structure was completed in October 2023 and is celebrated for its sleek minimalist design and structural ingenuity. Serving more than 13,000 pedestrians and cyclists monthly, the bridge connects key cycleways and walkways, setting new standards in lightweight bridge engineering.
Meanwhile, PHIVE – the $136 million world-class community, cultural, and civic hub located in Parramatta Square – took home the award for Design and Construction of a Public Works Project – Projects Greater than $5m. Designed by acclaimed French architect Manuelle Gautrand, PHIVE is a net-zero carbon building that houses the new City of Parramatta Library, Council Chambers, and a host of creative and public spaces. It also proudly holds a 6 Star Green Star rating, showcasing its sustainability credentials.
These accolades not only reinforce Parramatta’s status as a leader in urban innovation but also underscore its commitment to shaping a smart and sustainable future for its residents and visitors.
