Sydney, April 7, 2025 — In a major cost-of-living relief announcement, the Albanese Labor Government has unveiled plans to deliver one million subsidised home batteries to households, small businesses, and community facilities across Australia by 2030, if re-elected.
As part of a $2.3 billion Cheaper Home Batteries Program starting from 1 July 2025, the initiative will slash the cost of an average installed battery system by 30 per cent, saving Australians up to $4,000 on installation. This is expected to reduce household power bills by up to $1,100 annually for homes already equipped with rooftop solar — and up to $2,300 a year for those who install both solar panels and a battery.
The program aims to significantly reduce reliance on the electricity grid, helping to store solar energy for use during peak times and contributing to overall lower energy prices nationwide.
Minister for Energy and Climate Change Chris Bowen highlighted the importance of renewable storage:
“The sun doesn’t always shine – but households and businesses having batteries means we can keep solar energy on tap and keep energy bills down consistently.”
“We’ve already hit 46% renewable energy under Labor and we’re on track to reach 82% by 2030. We can’t afford to risk this progress.”
Anne Stanley, Member for Werriwa, praised the program’s local impact:
“We will provide support for households and small businesses right around Werriwa to help them buy one of our one million power bill busting batteries.”
“Every Australian in Werriwa will be eligible. The contrast at the next election is clear – a re-elected Albanese Government taking real action on cost of living, or Peter Dutton’s Liberals driving up power bills with a $600 billion nuclear plan.”
Labor’s announcement comes amid growing concerns about rising energy prices. The initiative directly contrasts with Opposition Leader Peter Dutton’s proposed nuclear energy policy, which Labor claims would increase household energy bills by up to $1,200 and involve cuts to essential services.
The batteries will be installed in homes to store solar energy, reducing peak demand and helping balance the national grid — a move that benefits both battery owners and the broader community.
The Cheaper Home Batteries Program is positioned as a key pillar in Labor’s strategy to tackle inflation pressures, support clean energy, and empower households to take control of their energy usage.
