Toll-Free M12 Motorway Reaches Major Milestone: 14 Kilometres Now Complete

Sydney, NSW – A significant milestone has been achieved in one of New South Wales' largest infrastructure projects, with 14 kilometres of the toll-free M12 Motorway now complete. This vital link, set to connect Western Sydney International Airport at Badgerys Creek to the broader Sydney motorway network, remains on track for its scheduled opening in 2026.

The $2.1 billion project, jointly funded by the Australian and NSW governments, is being delivered on time and on budget. Landscaping, signage, and safety infrastructure are currently being installed along the completed sections. Once finished, the M12 will stretch 16 kilometres, offering a seamless connection between the M7 Motorway, Elizabeth Drive, and The Northern Road.

The final 2-kilometre section connecting to the M7 remains under construction, but this week marks the first time motorists could theoretically traverse the route from The Northern Road to near the Elizabeth Drive off-ramp at Cecil Park.

This extensive project has seen:

  • Over 117,000 cubic metres of concrete poured

  • 3,085,587 cubic metres of earthworks completed

  • 2,320 metres of bridge structures built

  • 461 bridge piles and 637 bridge girders installed

  • More than 867,000 trees, shrubs, and grasses planted

  • 8,223 people employed, including 5,472 from the local community

Construction partners Seymour Whyte and the CPB Georgiou Group JV have completed the central and western sections, while the final linkage to the M7 progresses rapidly. A new alignment of Wallgrove Road at Cecil Hills has recently opened, paving the way for interchange ramps and bridgeworks.

A New Era for Western Sydney

Federal Minister for Infrastructure Catherine King highlighted the strategic importance of the M12, stating:

“We’re building Australia’s future by delivering the road and rail connections this new airport needs. With freight services starting at the airport next year, this motorway will ensure smooth, fast access to the wider Sydney network.”

NSW Deputy Premier and Minister for Western Sydney Prue Car emphasized the project’s benefits for local residents:

“This toll-free motorway will be a game-changer for Western Sydney—improving travel times and easing congestion without adding to the cost of living.”

NSW Treasurer Daniel Mookhey added:

“Three years ago, this was farmland. Today, we’re seeing a motorway near completion, a new city rising in Bradfield, and transformational infrastructure being built.”

NSW Roads Minister Jenny Aitchison noted the road is expected to carry up to 30,000 vehicles daily:

“This project provides a quality, toll-free alternative and is taking pressure off local roads. At the same time, we’re investing in key corridors like Mamre Road, Mulgoa Road, and Elizabeth Drive.”

Local members Anne Stanley (Werriwa) and Nathan Hagarty (Leppington) welcomed the progress, stating the M12 will provide easier access to the new airport, generate job opportunities, and better connect Western Sydney communities.

As the airport prepares to welcome its first flights, the M12 stands as a symbol of the massive transformation underway in Western Sydney—creating a future-ready transport network that supports economic growth and community development.
