Urban Wonderland Springs to Life Under the M4 in Granville

A bold new chapter in urban innovation has begun in Granville with the official opening of Junction Street Plaza, a $1.4 million recreational wonderland nestled beneath the M4 Motorway. Designed to transform an underutilised 1,000 square metre stretch into a buzzing community hub, the plaza is now open to the public with a focus on youth, activity, and inclusivity.

The City of Parramatta, in collaboration with the NSW Government through its 2021/22 Places to Play Program, has delivered a vibrant space featuring facilities for parkour, basketball, street skating, table tennis, and more.

Parramatta Lord Mayor Cr Martin Zaiter officially unveiled the space today, describing it as a standout urban park designed to energise and inspire.

“Junction Street Plaza is up there with some of the best urban parks around the world,” Cr Zaiter said. “It’s a creative, multi-purpose activity zone where young people — and the young at heart — can come together, stay active, and feel connected to their community.”

With a mix of bold artwork, interactive play areas, and landscaped gardens, the plaza has been shaped by input from the local community, ensuring it meets the needs of Granville’s growing and diverse population.

“Every element of this park has been thoughtfully planned — from the sports zones to the greenery — to create a space our residents can truly call their own,” Cr Zaiter added.

Minister for Planning and Public Spaces Paul Scully praised the transformation, highlighting its broader impact.

“This project has breathed new life into a space that had little public use,” Mr Scully said. “Junction Street Plaza is now a thriving recreational area for all ages and abilities — a testament to what great planning and community collaboration can achieve.”

The plaza is part of a broader push to create more liveable, healthy cities by converting overlooked public spaces into dynamic areas where people can gather, play, and thrive.

To date, the Places to Play program has delivered more than $16 million to similar projects across New South Wales.

With Granville’s urban landscape evolving rapidly, Junction Street Plaza sets a new benchmark for community-driven design — proving that even beneath a busy motorway, great things can grow.
